A vampire-like beast is called NC’s ‘creepiest urban legend’

The creepiest urban legends from every state have been compiled by The Business Insider’s travel section, This is Insider Travel, and North Carolina made the list for something called the “Beast from Bladenboro.” Reports date back to the early 1950s, according to Insider Travel, when multiple dogs were found drained of blood in the town of Bladenboro, which is about three hours southeast of Charlotte.

“People believed that there was a vampiric beast in the woods, an they tried to hunt the animal,” says the Insider. “Today, the town of Bladenboro has embraced their history, and actually holds a Beast Fest every year. But it's never been confirmed exactly what was stalking their town.” The web site NorthCarolinaGhosts.com says the story actually begins in Bladen County town of Clarkton in 1953, when a local woman heard her neighbors’ dogs barking and whimpering. “When she went out to investigate, she saw a large, cat-like creature skulk off into the darkness. That was the first sighting of The Beast of Bladenboro.”

In the days that followed, a half dozen dogs were killed, many with broken jaws, and all drained of blood. One was found decapitated. In January 1954, a human was attacked by “a large, cat-like creature” that eventually fled into the woods.

The History Channel television series “MonsterQuest” investigated the legend a decade ago and concluded that the attacker might have been a cougar, it is reported. Others have likened it to the Chupacabra, which has been called Puerto Rico’s version of a Yeti.

However, callers to the Observer claimed to have actually seen the beast, including one man who claims he saw the corpse.

“I saw the beast, dead, in the back of a pickup truck, while I was getting a haircut at Azzie Harden’s Barber Shop in Bladenboro,” said Tom Chandler. “I lived through the whole thing and even though I was only seven it made a whopper of an impression on me. I have stories.”
