Hecate has been acknowledged as the Goddess of witches, magick and spellcraft since the time of the Ancient Greeks. Witches have called on Her to empower magickal works for centuries.

In Medieval times, the Church mounted a violent campaign to demonize and destroy the Goddess and Her Daughters. Hecate was not defeated. She exists in the dark, mysterious part of each of us. In order to be complete and integrated within ourselves, we need to come to know and appreciate the hidden side of our nature. We need to face the Dark Goddess Within and build a relationship with Her.

She is the Guardian of our unconscious and we should allow ourselves to appreciate the beauty and strength of that secret internal realm.Calling on Hecate to help us fulfill our dreams, wishes and goals adds Her power to our workings. Magick is an affirmation of the Goddess Within and of our connection with Her. Ritual and spell work reaffirm and strengthen this connection. The warm, energized feeling that remains after magickal work is physical proof of Her presence and the flow of magick. To learn from Hecate involves spiritual sacrifice.

To gain the knowledge that She can bestow, we must give up negative habits and thought processes. We should be considerate and thoughtful of our fellow inhabitants of the Earth. We need to open our minds to new ways of thinking and understanding.A relationship with Hecate based on respect and trust opens us to a universe in which anything and everything is possible. Our potential is limited only by our imagination!

Symbols of Hecate

The symbols of Hecate are many. Among them are:

black dogs, black horses, crossroads, torches, snakes, many-tailed scourges, mirrors, the waning/dark moon, and “Hecate’s Wheel”, a symbol used by Hecatines, Dianics and Aquarians, three Wiccan traditions that include the worship of Hecate.Roles of HecateHecate performs many roles for Her followers. She represents the wise grandmother, the compassionate nurse, the sexy older sorceress, and the established matron.

She is called upon for counsel, guidance, and decision making; to banish wandering ghosts from this plane; to guide the dead and admit them to the afterworld; for protection during illness and in childbirth; to help people confront their fears and face their shadows; and to preside over acts of magic and divination. She is the power behind second sight, creative insight, learned wisdom, and general divination abilities.“…people who avoid their fears also avoid their power.”

~Timothy Roderick
Hecate’s comments and advice are often cryptic, and she doesn’t pull Her punches, but She is honest and will ALWAYS help you see the way clearly, even if it takes you where you may not want to go. But She won’t force you or make your decisions for you; She lights whatever way you choose, even if it’s not the right one. Ultimately, the decision is always yours.“The problem comes when you try to find permanent answers to impermanent problems.”

~ Hecate, “Apprentice to Power”
Hecate is also the best goddess to work with when dealing with aging, death and the afterlife. She teaches that sometimes, when there are things happening that you can do nothing about, it is best to stop, be still, and wait. “The still pause of nonactivity is Hecate’s contribution to the journey of becoming…”

~ Demetra George Worship of Hecate Hecate has been worshipped since ancient times.

Shrines and statues of Hecate were set up in front of Greek temple complexes to keep evil away. Her altars are always built very low to the ground, signifying both her chthonic/earth connection and her dwelling in an underground cave. These altars were usually built at crossroads and by thresholds, both of which are Her sacred places, and offerings known as “Hecate suppers” were left there.

Her rituals were (and still are) performed at midnight whenever possible; this is considered “the witching hour”, and since She is the Goddess of Witches, it’s a very appropriate time. Sometimes sacrifices were left for Her, usually black female lambs or dogs, and honey. Modern worshipers usually skip the animal sacrifices (AND I JP VANIR DONT SUPPORT THIS), but honey and other items, such as pomegranates are often left as offerings.

Some forms of worship associated with Hecate that are performed today are Cronings, Hecate suppers, any rituals or actions honoring the dead, and all forms of divination, especially mirror scrying. Hecate has “moved with the times”, so to speak; she is a timeless goddess because she represents help in dealing with humanity’s eternal problems: fear, decisions, and death.

Hecate was the first of my personal matron deities. When I was trying to find my spiritual path, I did a meditation to ask Her if this was the right way to go and why it was so hard for me to come to a decision about it. Her answer was immediate and to the point. She had a profound influence on me then, and still does to this day. I light candles and leave the names of those who are dying, who have just died, or who are trying to make important decisions on her altar.

I also honor her feast days in August and November. In return, I always feel her presence when I have important decisions to make, or when I’m dealing with a shadow or lesser fear. I find she responds to both prayers and rituals, and will speak directly to my mind if I send her a silent call for help. I know I am never alone, because Hecate walks before me, lighting my path.

“Working with Hecate is a way to access our intuitive and inspirited side.”

~ Marcia Starck Hecate Meditation (adapted from a meditation by Timothy Roderick):

Close your eyes, ground and center as you do for all meditations, in whatever way works best for you. Feel yourself passing through mist and darkness. Eventually the mist clears, and you find yourself standing at a crossroads at night, with just enough moonlight to see the three paths splitting in different directions before you.

Behind you stand three large, upright stones. As you study the paths to see which you should choose, you hear someone moving behind you. Turning, you see a dark, veiled figure come out from behind the stones. This is Hecate, and she stands silently before you, holding a mirror.

Ask Hecate for guidance with something in your life. Maybe you have a fear that needs to be faced. Perhaps you have a decision to make, and you are unsure of which choice is best for you. Perhaps you have NO idea what to do about a particular situation. Or maybe you simply want to know if there is anything She wishes to tell you.You ask Her your question, and She holds up Her mirror. What do you see? If you see nothing in the mirror, Hecate will whisper a word or two in your ear. Whatever you see or hear, it will be the answer you need for now.

Now the mist rapidly closes around you, and Hecate, the stones and the roads fade into the darkness. You feel the mist whirling around you. Then it disappears, and you know you are back in your body. Take a few deep breaths, and when you are ready, open your eyes.

“Hecate teaches us that the way to the vision that inspires renewal is to be found in moving through the darkness.”

~ Demetra GeorgeHecate’s Response to Invocation by a Witch
An original poem in free verse by Ka Wahine AhiHail, Witch!

I have heard your entreaties. I appear here in the space between worlds you have cast.

I see the light that emanates from within and feel the fire of your passion.

Yes, you are one of my Daughters. I am pleased that you call to Me in your craft.

Your altar holds many enticing things for me.

You have dressed a black candle with My sacred herbs.

The incense delights Me and you have provided honey as a sweet offering.
I am prepared to take heed of your wishes.

I will decide if this is truly worthy of My consideration.

At this customary time during the cycle of the Moon, With incantations, chants and the power of will, You send your energy into the Universe to take physical form.

I hear your petition.

I deem it worthy.

Your goal is noble and works kindness in your chaotic, fearful, ignorant world.

Your art, performed in My Name, will bring Me much Honor and Glory.
I am prepared to lend my Power to your magick.
I bless your endeavor and imbue it with potency to come to manifest.

It is done!

Now, you give thanks that I have joined you in your effort.
You have felt My awe-inspiring presence and supreme might.
Brightest blessings to you as well, my Daughter.

We will be together in the world between the worlds again soon. With the awesome powers of Hecate and the Goddess Within, anything and everything is possible!

Hecate Ritual: Banishing Negativity In The Home A Ritual for the Dark Moon

by Morgan Danae Stardancer

In this ritual you will be calling on Hecate in Her Crone aspect. It is performed during the Dark of the Moon. Some people are fearful of working with the Dark Moon and the Crone, but She is the wise protector who will take your negativity and transform it in her cauldron of change.

Begin by setting up your altar as you normally do for ritual, making sure you have a black candle and wine or water in your chalice in addition to anything else you use.

You will also need a cleansing, purifying incense and a censer or some kind of container which can be carried around your home. (I use a large shell to hold smoldering charcoal, or stick incense.)

It is best to set your altar on the floor for this rite, but you may do it however you feel most comfortable.

Cast your circle as you normally do. When you are through, kneel before your altar and light the black candle.

With your arms held, palms upward, at your sides, call Hecate by saying three times:

Hecate, beautiful Crone of Night
I call you here to put things right.
Transform the negative thought and painAnd help my life be whole again. (3x)

Close your eyes.

When you feel the presence of Hecate and know she is there to help you, open your eyes. Bow your head to her to show your reverence, then take the chalice, saying:

"Lady of the Dark Moon,
Share with me this wine.
Bring your protection to
Flood this life of mine.

May the waters of your eternal womb
Bring change most divine."

Sip a small amount of the wine (or water), envisioning it as liquid energy, flowing to effect a positive change within and outside of you.

Leave the rest as an offering to Hecate.Light the purifying incense in the censer, cut a door in the Circle, and, beginning in the eastern-most corner of your home, smudge your home, going counter-clockwise.

Go into every closet, the bathroom, the garage - make sure your entire house is smudged.

As you go, chant:

Negativity be gone. Come back into the Circle and visualize your entire house and yard bathed in a peaceful blue light. Since you have created a void by banishing the negativity, you will need to fill that void.

Now going deosil (clock-wise), re-trace your steps through the house, asking that good, protective spirits come into your home and that positive energies replace the negative ones that have just been banished.

This is an important step, because if you don't fill the void with something good, the negativity will come right back. Sometimes during such a ritual, I take one large and one small black stone and charge them to keep away negativity. I promise Hecate that the large one will remain in a prominent place in my house and that I will keep the small one with me at all times.

Thank the Goddess Hecate.Meditate if you wish, visualizing your life free from negative happenings and feelings and full of love, prosperity, and happiness. Feel how She has changed your home and your life.

Close the Circle and know that it is done.
