Witchcraft on a budget by alura Rose

If you have ever been to a “seasoned” witch’s house, you know that the craft has so many magickal items, tools, trinkets, jewelry and such forth, that one could collect, use and wear. It might become worrisome on how to acquire so much. Perhaps you have no clue where to even start looking. Being so close to Salem, it quite easy for me to find what I am looking for, but price gets in the way and if you are not so lucky, you may not know where to go. Let me help you with that.

There are many shops online but you may find that things are quite pricey there as well. Here is a list of my favorite non-witchy places to find things affordable and local.

5. Good Will, Salvation Army, and other thrift shops.

Believe it or not, you can find many suitable chalices, candlestick holders, bells and much more at your local thrift shops. Silver cups and brass candlestick holders line the shelves in the kitchen section. The trick here is to take your time, visit often and do not be afraid to polish and look underneath the first appearance. Anything found second hand should, of course be cleared from any previous energy. You can do this by saging and then washing and polishing or you can bury the item in your yard for a complete moon cycle and then dig it up and clean.

Look for:

  • silver and brass cups/chalices (altar cup)
  • unique candlesticks both silver and brass (Goddess and God Candle holders)
  • bells, brass, silver and even glass (altar bell)
  • old bottles and jars (for spell crafting)

4. AC Moore, Michael’s and Other Craft Stores

Endless possibilities can be found here. Grab a wood disc and paint a peyton or  sigil to work upon. You can also find bottles for spells. Jars for that honey jar spell, cords for spell cords, twine, charms and so much more. Use your imagination for ideals but many of your spell working ingredients can start at one of these.

Look for:

  • Picture frames (to create your scrying mirror)
  • Wood disks, big and small (paint or wood burn your pentacle, peyton or find small ones to make runes)
  • Bottles and jars for spell crafting
  • Fabric (to cover your altar or wrap your magickal tools)

3. Dollar Stores

Dollar and budget stores can be a wonderful place for a witch. Prices for the bargain shopper.

Check out your local dollar store for:

  • seven-day candles
  • Picture frames (scrying mirror)
  • Glass Bottles (for spells)

2. Nature

The thrifty witch keeps his/her eyes out for things to use from nature. The green witch knows that nature will leave just the most perfect thing you need for that spell.

Keep an eye out for:

  • acorns, tops and bottoms (great for working with the fairies and that special fairy house)
  • feathers (gifts from allies, use for protection, dream catchers and more)
  • rocks
  • shells (love spells)
  • flowers that you can dry out

1. Home

I did not realize when I was a newbie, that so much magick lives in the hearth. Take walks around your home to gind the nature piece but inside….

look for these:

  • black cat hair (have a black cat? start brushing it. Black cat hair is great for success and luck)
  • Egg shells (a good additive for protection and fertility spells)
  • herbs (many of those herbs in your cabinet have medicinal and magickal properties. Do not skimp, buy good quality spices)
  • Square Nails (great for protection and if your house is old enough, you may find a few to use.)
  • Horse shoes (if you have horses, old horse shoes are good for luck and protection depending on which way you hang it.

Hopefully, these ideas will get you started.
